(So you can stand out from the competition and land more freelance clients)
This blog reveals how to get the Upwork Top Rated Freelancer Badge. Alongside this will also show the benefits that come along with having this badge. I also explain the requirements you need to meet to get the other new Upwork badges. These include the Rising Talent, Top Rated Plus, and Expert-Vetted Badges. This is great if you are a freelancer, consultant, or agency that wants to leverage Upwork. Whether you are just starting out freelancing, or if you are looking to drive qualified clients, this blog will show you how to take advantage of Upwork's Badging System.
Sneak Peek:
The first badge is called 'rising talent.' A rising talent badge highlights some of the best new members in the Upwork marketplace. This is free for freelancers who have great potential based on a strong background in their field and early success with Upwork clients. Rising talent agencies and freelancers have strong backgrounds in their Industries. To become a rising talent, you need to have a 100% completed profile with signs of great experience. Upwork's positive performance includes: Submitting high-quality proposals for jobs. As well as complying with the terms of service.
This is an awesome badge that Upwork introduced for anyone that's on the way to becoming top rated. You can get this rising talent badge before you have a lot of reviews on the platform which can help get the momentum going for you. It's also for those who don't have a job success score built yet. This badge is going to help you
stand out from the competition
as a freelancer to possibly get hired. When you get that rising talent badge that doesn't mean you can't get all the other badges, but it's a great start. If you look in the section called
'benefits for talent'
the badge will show on your profile. You also get reduced fees on featured jobs. You also get a one-time bonus of 30 free connects so so you can submit more proposals. Lastly, you get access to chat and ticket support from a specialized customer support team when you are recognized as 'rising talent'. This is important because it's always helpful to have a direct line to Upwork for help if you ever need it.
Having a Top Rated badge as a freelancer has had a massive impact on the number of clients I can reach. It allows those who have accumulated great feedback on their past projects to get rewarded for that. When you're starting freelancing don't ignore these badges and these credentials. The top rated badge highlights freelancers and agencies who have built a strong reputation on Upwork by getting positive feedback from their clients time after time. They represent the top 10% of talent on Upwork. So not everyone gets this badge, out of all the freelancers on the platform, there only 10% on Upwork who have the honor of representing this badge. This badge is something that you have to work on keeping as well which makes it that much more prestigious.
Once you get this badge, Upwork updates this eligibility every two weeks. This is so the most current outstanding members of our marketplace get recognized. That means every two weeks you have the possibility of either keeping or losing your top rated badge. To keep this badge, you first need to show consistent high-quality work with multiple clients. That means you've worked on multiple projects and got five-star reviews and feedback from all of them.
You also need to have an
outstanding job success score
of at least 90 percent. So make sure when you're working with clients to let them know that every review they give has a direct impact on your future and your income. Then, if you completed the job successfully, make sure your clients mark that down correctly. You also need to have an up-to-date complete freelancer or agency profile. You can do this by accurately listing current availability for new jobs. If you're denying every invite you get because you're not available, Upwork's going to catch on to that and penalize your invisibility. So always make sure you're accurately representing your availability and your skills. Also, having a strong earnings history is the other criteria for this badge.
Benefits Of The Top Rated Badge
There are many benefits to being a top rated freelancer. Most importantly, it displays on your profile for all clients to see. This makes your profile stand out from the competition. You also get reduced fees on feature jobs starting at 10% as well as more control over your job success score. This is important because if a client doesn't leave you feedback when you're top rated that doesn't hurt you as much. Whereas if you're a new freelancer and you did a job and don't get feedback, it hurts you even more. This badge acts as a safeguard to your job success score if a client were to do that.
You're also able to submit proposals to jobs assisted by talent specialists. A talent specialist is someone on the Upwork platform whose job is to match different talent with high-end clients. These are projects that are multi-thousand dollar deals usually and a talent specialist is going to help make that connection. They're also going to help you get hired and tell the client all of your experience. This is a major benefit because you will have someone that's on the Upwork platform that can help you out.
On top of that, as a Top Rated Upwork Freelancer you get access to the digest email which makes it easier for you to find jobs that are a great match for you. They will send you an email with jobs that are the best fit for you based on your skills and based on what you've worked on in the past. This also will help you get ahead of the competition and apply to jobs that you want to get that much quicker. Another benefit is you get faster payments on the hourly contracts and premium customer support. This includes phone and chat. With all this premium support, Upwork wants you to succeed when you're top rated.
After you get your top rated badge, there is another badge above that is called a top rated plus badge. This is a newer badge that they released at the beginning of this year to provide an even MORE prestigious level of honor. The top rated plus designation highlights freelancers and agencies with proven success on larger long-term contracts. Only 3% of freelancers on the platform have received this badge because the top rated plus badge has additional criteria that needs to get met. So not only do you have to have earned and maintained the top rated status, but freelancers have to have $10,000 in total earnings over the last 12 months. Agencies have to have $20,000 in total earnings over the last 12 months. It is also required to have worked or are working on one or more large contracts in the last 12 months.
This is all without negative outcomes. So to qualify for top rated plus as an individual, a freelancer must be a non-exclusive agency contractor. This badge is for the freelancers who are able to add a
tremendous amount of value
to companies. Upwork wants to give the ability for those freelancers to stand out even more with this badge. The top rated and the top rated plus have a few differences. For example, you need to have a 12 month earnings of at least $10,000. You also need to have a large contract which Upwork has different criteria for based on their terms of service.
The last badge is what's called 'expert vetted.' This represents the Top 1% of freelancers on Upwork. An expert vetted badge is granted for highlighted talent that has gone through a pre-screening process by experts in their field. Upwork quotes that these are the Upwork elite freelancers who have been evaluated by their technical talent managers for their expertise and their ‘soft skills.’
The following freelancers can earn an expert vetted badge:
Ultimately, having an expert vetted badge is the highest level of badge currently available. It provides all the advantages of the other badges in addition to the ability to show to Upwork Enterprise and Business clients.
In Conclusion
Getting the Rising Talent, Top Rated, Top Rated Plus, or Expert Vetted Badge may seem impossible at forst, but the truth is that it's achievable when you put your head down you get to work.
